The BirdieSisters played in their fourth Jekyll Island Cup this past weekend. The tournament was held at Pine Lakes Golf Course on Jekyll Island in Georgia. This is the girls opening tournament of the season, they haven’t been playing golf on grass since late October. When we left Chicago the temperature was 37 degrees with plans for snow that evening. When we arrivered to Jekyll Island, the sun was out in full force and the tempeture was 91 degrees. We played three practice rounds before the tournament but we needed many more. Over all, for the first tournament of the year, a 5th and 6th place finish is just short of where we want to be. Erica Jackson brought home the first Jekyll Island trophy for the BirdieSisters by making the Top 5! The BirdieSisters participated in their third “Jekyll Island Cup” on Sunday and Monday of this week. The goal was to move up the ranks. Unfortunately, even though we attempted to arrive in time for 3 days of outdoor course practice, our delayed flight and terrible rain storms limited practice to one day outside prior to the tournament. While the temps reached the low 50s during the afternoon on tournament days, the practice round day and the mornings and late afternoon temps on tournament days were in the 30s and 40s with winds and some rain on day 2.
Erica Jackson showed everyone that she can really play this game. On day one, her first eight holes served as a warm-up to her 6 straight pars. Then, after a double boggie on 15, the horn blew to halt all play due to night fall (Erica had teed off at 2:15pm due to a frost delay). Erica resumed play at 7:40am the next day on hole number 16. Unfortunately, she had lost her par streak and ended up with 2 boggie’s and a double boggie to finish the first round. At 12:09pm the same day, Erica hit the course again for her second round of 18. She was on fire — a boggie on hole number one, followed by 8 straight pars to finish the front 9 at one over par. However, after a long day of golf, the rain and winds began to surface and Erica began to wear down on the back 9 with a few pars, several boggies and one double boggie. Nevertheless, she managed to drop her score by seven (7) shots. Although Erica played some of her best golf, she only ended up with an 8th place finish. As we mentioned previously, the field was small but tough! In fact, the winner shot one under par.
Myah Jackson had to switch golf courses because the scheduled course experienced rain damage and became unplayable. She competed on a 100 year old golf course that looked every bit of its age. Unfortunately, Myah’s first day was one of her worst in the last few years. She struggled with her chip shots and her putting. However, like Erica, on day 2 Myah dropped 7 shots giving her a 9th place finish. As anticipated, both BirdieSisters got into their groove on day 3. Unfortunately, day 3 was day 2 of the tournament instead of day 3 of practice as we had planned. If their day 3 play is an indicator of their future play — look out!!!

The BirdieSisters made it to Jekyll Island and gave it their best. It was another exciting time on a prestigious golf course with kids from all around the United States and some from outside the states. The weather was in the low to upper sixties with some rain and winds. Nevertheless, the young golfers played like champions. They displayed confidence, focus and professionalism. Congratulations to a few of our friends from the midwest who finished in the top three. They proved that there is hope for golfers from cold weather states. One finished first in the boys 10-year old division and two finished 2nd and 3rd in the girls 10-year old division. We would also like to congratulate our friend from Virginia who won the girls 8 year-old division! Keep up the good work.

BirdieSister Myah Jackson set a goal to finish in the top ten in the Girls 8 year-old division at the 2009 U.S. Kids Regional Tournament in Jekyll Island, GA. Starting out with a 44 on day one and dropping two strokes on day two (42), Myah Jackon finished 9th in her division with a two-day score of 86. Day one was cloudy and the temperature was in the upper 60s. Day two was sunny but windy and cool (low 60s). Myah drove the ball well both days (didn’t miss a fairway). However, as expected from playing indoors over the past several months, her short game wasn’t as consistent. All in all, Myah’s game met expectations. Myah is looking forward to warmer weather in the windy city so she can get outside and improve her short game. Congratulations Myah!

Erica and Myah Jackson are preparing to compete in the U.S. Kids Golf Regional Competition in Jekyll, Island GA. They are leaving Chicago on Friday, playing a practice round on Saturday, and competing on Sunday and Monday (February 16th and 17th). The Jekyll Island Championship is an amazing event. Kids come from all around the world to compete. In addition to golf, there is a banquet for all of the players and their parents on Saturday night. After the opening ceremony, the kids can interact with each other and play in an indoor fun area prior to becoming serious competitors for the rest of the event. This is BirdieSister Erica Jackson’s last 9-hole tournament. She plans to make it memorable!
Unlike much of their competition, the BirdieSisters haven’t played a round of outdoor golf since they competed at Doral (Miami, FL) in December. Yes, there are some drawbacks to living in Chicago. However, the BirdieSisters have been practicing at home and at an indoor golf dome in the Chicago area. While indoor golf isn’t ideal, its the next best thing to playing the course. The BirdieSisters are praying for nice weather and a safe and successful trip. You can follow the tournament each day by visiting www.uskidsgolf.com. Thank you for being a supporter of the BirdieSisters!

The U S Kids “Jekyll Island Cup” will be BirdieSister Erica Jackson’s last 9 hole golf tournament. Erica’s age group will play 9 holes at 2100 yards. There is no hole-by-hole breakdown yet. The remainder of her tournaments at 10 years-old will be 18 holes. When Erica turns eleven (11) in May of 2009, she will say “goodbye” to 9-hole tournaments.
