The BirdieSisters played in their fourth Jekyll Island Cup this past weekend. The tournament was held at Pine Lakes Golf Course on Jekyll Island in Georgia. This is the girls opening tournament of the season, they haven’t been playing golf on grass since late October. When we left Chicago the temperature was 37 degrees with plans for snow that evening. When we arrivered to Jekyll Island, the sun was out in full force and the tempeture was 91 degrees. We played three practice rounds before the tournament but we needed many more. Over all, for the first tournament of the year, a 5th and 6th place finish is just short of where we want to be. Erica Jackson brought home the first Jekyll Island trophy for the BirdieSisters by making the Top 5! BirdieSisters played today in their 3rd US Kids local tour tournament at “Bittersweet Golf Course” in Gurnee Illinois. The golf course is 50 miles (1 hour 16 minutes) from home. Erica’s Tee time was 7:30 a.m. and Myah’s tee time was 8:04 a.m. The weather started out cool with a temp. of 67 degrees but by the middle of the round it rose to a very comforable 75 degree mark.
BirdieSister Erica Jackson can’t seem to find her way out of a first hole double boggy. This is her 3rd start with this score. However, she is committed to focusing more on how to execute her shot without letting her tee box jitters impact her game. Today Erica Jackson finished with a six over par, two shots off the lead.
BirdieSister Myah Jackson was on fire today! Myah started her round with three pars, 2 birdies, a par, 2 more birdies and ended with her lone 3 putt boggy. This is the first sub-par score for Myah and her short game was a major factor, with only 16 putts all day. She did not miss a driver shot and one traveled over 200 yards. This was a site to see! Congratulations to Myah Jackson. Today the BirdieSisters played in the US Kids local tour event number 3. It was the second US Kids event for the Birdiesisters. The tournament was held at “Boone Creek Golf Course” in McHenry Illinois, 60 miles from home (1 hour 23 minutes ). The weather condition at the tee box was 90 degrees and sunny. Erica Jackson’s tee time was 3:27 p.m. and Myah Jackson’s tee time was 4:00 p.m.
BirdieSister Erica Jackson played against the course today. Erica got off to a slow start with a double boggy at hole 1 but somehow managed to pull out a score of 4 over par. Erica needs to increase her understanding of how to score in the game of golf. Short game, short game, Erica needs to continue to think short game!
BirdieSister Myah Jackson played with her good friend Haniya Ghazi, with whom she has played on this tour for several years. Myah’s and Haniya’s skill levels are comparable and their friendship makes for a pleasant round of golf. Myah is in the early stages of taking her game to another level, but she is also still learning how to score and when to be aggressive. Even though you will always leave shots on the course, the BirdieSisters must learn how to take advantage of more opportunities.

BirdieSister Myah Jackson set a goal to finish in the top ten in the Girls 8 year-old division at the 2009 U.S. Kids Regional Tournament in Jekyll Island, GA. Starting out with a 44 on day one and dropping two strokes on day two (42), Myah Jackon finished 9th in her division with a two-day score of 86. Day one was cloudy and the temperature was in the upper 60s. Day two was sunny but windy and cool (low 60s). Myah drove the ball well both days (didn’t miss a fairway). However, as expected from playing indoors over the past several months, her short game wasn’t as consistent. All in all, Myah’s game met expectations. Myah is looking forward to warmer weather in the windy city so she can get outside and improve her short game. Congratulations Myah!

Erica and Myah Jackson are preparing to compete in the U.S. Kids Golf Regional Competition in Jekyll, Island GA. They are leaving Chicago on Friday, playing a practice round on Saturday, and competing on Sunday and Monday (February 16th and 17th). The Jekyll Island Championship is an amazing event. Kids come from all around the world to compete. In addition to golf, there is a banquet for all of the players and their parents on Saturday night. After the opening ceremony, the kids can interact with each other and play in an indoor fun area prior to becoming serious competitors for the rest of the event. This is BirdieSister Erica Jackson’s last 9-hole tournament. She plans to make it memorable!
Unlike much of their competition, the BirdieSisters haven’t played a round of outdoor golf since they competed at Doral (Miami, FL) in December. Yes, there are some drawbacks to living in Chicago. However, the BirdieSisters have been practicing at home and at an indoor golf dome in the Chicago area. While indoor golf isn’t ideal, its the next best thing to playing the course. The BirdieSisters are praying for nice weather and a safe and successful trip. You can follow the tournament each day by visiting www.uskidsgolf.com. Thank you for being a supporter of the BirdieSisters!

The U S Kids “Jekyll Island Cup” will be BirdieSister Erica Jackson’s last 9 hole golf tournament. Erica’s age group will play 9 holes at 2100 yards. There is no hole-by-hole breakdown yet. The remainder of her tournaments at 10 years-old will be 18 holes. When Erica turns eleven (11) in May of 2009, she will say “goodbye” to 9-hole tournaments.
